Gerry McCaffrey, longstanding football, softball and volleyball official in the Grand Rapids area, passed away on August 8 after losing a five-month battle with lung cancer. McCaffrey was fighting an uphill battle since April, as he was diagnosed with the disease relatively late in its progression. McCaffrey will be missed. Prayers and thoughts go out [...]

The latest news has punter Mike Sadler of Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern headed to Michigan State next year. According to Sadler, there was never a doubt about where he would go to school. Lucky Spartans, in more ways than one; Sadler is a 4.0 student who scored a 32 on his ACT. New position [...]

For the second installment in a series titled, “Better Know Your Area’s Soccer Squads” (it’s really titled “Preseason Top 10,” but the former is much more catchy, in my humble opinion), The Zoo Sports explores the Grand Rapids Area. Observe, enjoy, and see if you don’t learn a thing or two:

[EDIT (6/10/09): Dennis was not drafted in the first three rounds of the MLB draft, nor in the first two consolation rounds. Therefore he will be a Wolverine next year. Not sure whether his earlier declaration that he would probably go to UofM hurt his draft value, or if the fact that he didn't get [...]

Forest Hills Central added another trophy to their growing case with a recent Boys Golf Division 1 state championship victory. I certainly don’t want to jinx anyone (and don’t tell EGR), but they’re making a pretty legit case for schoolwide athletic supremacy in the GR area for 2009…

Playoffs schmayoffs. Who needs ‘em when you’ve got Laxpower.com, who went to the trouble of ranking the top 15 boys lacrosse teams in the state and the top 15 girls lacrosse teams in the state. I’ll leave it up to you whether it has any bearing whatsoever on overall performance…

If you consider yourself a golfer, you may want to skip this one. A 9-year-old golfer from Rockford recorded his first hole-in-one on Monday. Jake O’Dette, currently in third grade, used an 8-iron to record the ace on the 91-yard, seventh hole at Tustin Trails Golf Course, about 10 miles south of Cadillac…
