WMA takes attendance: Hills one-up Heights

A look around the wide world of high school sports and the web that covers it.  Well, not the whole world, mostly just the distance between Lake Michigan and somewhere-in-the-vicinity-of-Lansing, give or take about 50-miles.  In an order wholly indecipherable to the naked eye.  So look closely:

Good GMC West Michigan Allstar — Garrett Cullen

This week’s Good GMC West Michigan All Star is Garrett Cullen, a senior leader on the Forest Hills Eastern cross country team.

Forest Hills Eastern, ranked at #5 in the state entering the Regional round, have been looking up at 1st place Ionia the entire season. The Hawks have had an extremely successful season by any [...]

To blowout, or not to blowout? That is the question

Caledonia is sans-fingernails after round-1 win over Portage Northern

They say that by an inch or by a mile, winning is winning.  You’ll get no argument from me on that one.  But while at first examination it seems like it would be nice to cruise through round-1 of the playoffs  by a mile, like East [...]

The rise and fall (and rise?) of Forest Hills Eastern

Forest Hills Eastern was once 5-0. Now 5-3, they need a win to make the playoffs.

Perhaps more so than at any other level, success in high school sports is determined in large part by a teams’ management of its collective psyche.  At the high school level, a winless teams’ manic commitment to defeating [...]

Ottawa Hills Devon Ivy looks for a crease during his 63-yard punt return touchdown

After less than four minutes of play, Ottawa Hills already found themselves down 6-0 to Forest Hills Eastern.  Their first three attempts at equaling the score ended with a fizzle (one punt and two turnovers on downs), and the Bengals looked [...]

Forest Hills Eastern's Zach Wilkerson

It’s tough to explain what happened to the 2008 version of Grand Rapids Forest Hills Eastern.  After making the playoffs in three consecutive seasons from ‘05-’07, the Hawks fell off a cliff in 2008, losing their first eight games before finishing the season with a heartening but essentially meaningless victory.  [...]

Local pole vaulters stick together

One of the top pole-vaulters in the area last spring was Josh Patterson, a three sport athlete out of Sparta.  Josh was diagnosed with leukemia on July 18th.  To support him during the upcoming trials, trials much more significant than the next meet, KP Athletics held a pole-vaulting competition called “Vault for Josh” at Forest [...]

GR Soccer Preseason Top 10

For the second installment in a series titled, “Better Know Your Area’s Soccer Squads” (it’s really titled “Preseason Top 10,” but the former is much more catchy, in my humble opinion), The Zoo Sports explores the Grand Rapids Area.  Observe, enjoy, and see if you don’t learn a thing or two:

Boys Lacrosse all-staters

Moving to Division-1 from Division-2, Alex VanSlyke, sophomore from Forest Hills Eastern, was awarded his second consecutive spot on the all-state first team (and doesn’t look too enthused about it, from the picture).  Two-fer-two, as they say.  Along with VanSlyke, a plethora of other WM’ers were also named all-staters: Ray Sabon & DJ Lubs (Rockford), [...]

High School Baseball Top 10 (5/24/09)

Gracias to the GR Press for these rankings.

As the regular season comes to a close, these rankings are pretty accurate.  They obviously don’t dictate postseason success, but they do provide a pretty clear picture of how the top Grand Rapids teams would be seeded, if that were how the playoffs were done.

1. Forest Hills Central [...]
