Wayland refocuses, survives scare from Caledonia

Caledonia's Luke Wiest steals the ball in the fourth | DavidChandlerPhoto.com

High quality, professional action prints from the game available from David Chandler Photography.

In the process of winning 20-consecutive ballgames, some funny things can tend to happen to a team’s sense of itself.  Whether you describe it as ego, confidence, swagger or anything else, the [...]

Good GMC West Michigan Allstar: Lexi Miller

The latest Good GMC West Michigan All Star is Lexi Miller, sophomore point guard on Caledonia’s basketball team.

In a game that had been hotly contested throughout, Caledonia had played almost the entire fourth quarter with a slim lead. Finally, late in the quarter, they managed to increase that lead to as many as four points.  [...]

WMA takes attendance, as read by mostly runners

A look around the wide world of high school sports and the web that covers it.  Well, not the whole world, mostly just the distance between Lake Michigan and somewhere-in-the-vicinity-of-Lansing, give or take about 50-miles.  In an order wholly indecipherable to the naked eye.  So look closely:

Regional final predictions, Division 1-3 — Prepseer
Brainard is a [...]

To blowout, or not to blowout? That is the question

Caledonia is sans-fingernails after round-1 win over Portage Northern

They say that by an inch or by a mile, winning is winning.  You’ll get no argument from me on that one.  But while at first examination it seems like it would be nice to cruise through round-1 of the playoffs  by a mile, like East [...]

WMA takes attendance, as read by unnaturally mean tackle breakers

White Pigeon RB Alex Krajniak is mean on the field, at the request of his coach

A look around the wide world of high school sports and the web that covers it.  Well, not the whole world, mostly just the distance between Lake Michigan and somewhere-in-the-vicinity-of-Lansing, give or take about 50-miles.  In an order wholly [...]

The rise and fall (and rise?) of Forest Hills Eastern

Forest Hills Eastern was once 5-0. Now 5-3, they need a win to make the playoffs.

Perhaps more so than at any other level, success in high school sports is determined in large part by a teams’ management of its collective psyche.  At the high school level, a winless teams’ manic commitment to defeating [...]

Games to watch in Week-8: These are the days

Can Cal's Luke Wiest run away from GRCC in week-8?

Two weeks left to go in the 2009 regular season.  The West Michigan high school football landscape is divided into four sections: You’ve got your undefeateds (even if just barely), your playoff teams, your bubble teams, and everybody else.  No matter into which category you [...]

Track spikes and glass slippers for (un)surprisingly undefeated East Kentwood

Quarterback Jon Henry (left) leads the Falcons' speedy backfield. Many games turn out just like above, only with pads.

Last year, East Kentwood scored 191-points in what was an abysmal 2-7 campaign.  Given that they return 16-starters from last year’s squad, many naturally expected more of the same.  Especially considering their schedule.

Week-1 was Caledonia, [...]

Does Searn have his head on straighter?

Not completely irrelevant, Searn uses the four horsemen of Notre Dame (1924) as his personal avatar

If MaxPreps is the Microsoft of high school football rankings in Michigan (ubiquitous, and bloated almost to the point of ineffectiveness), then Searn’s forums are the Macintosh (streamlined, user friendly and laser focused, in this case to Michigan).

And a [...]

W.Mich dominates MaxPreps Top-25

Ranking football teams before the first snap of official practice, much less live game action, is ridiculous.  It’s way too early to predict how teams will gel together, which talent will fail to live up to its billing, and which no-name players will step up in a big way.  Surprises always happen, and rankings at [...]

Girls Soccer all-staters

From girls soccer, Forest Hills Northern’s Erin Sellman’s 25 goals were not for naught.  She was awarded her first first-team all-state honors for Division 2.  Along with Sellman, East Grand Rapids’ Chelsea Peterson & Liz Ellis, and Caledonia’s Hailey Yondo were awarded first-team all-state for D2, while Unity Christian’s Jillian Honderd & Lindsay Jipping received [...]

Lowell vs. FHC – Saturday

After clobbering Caledonia 13-2 in Tuesday’s pre-districts, Lowell’s baseball team will face off against Forest Hills Central in the district semifinals at Caledonia (Saturday @ 10:00AM).  The District clash between two of West Michigan’s heavyweights will be a rematch of the opening game of the season, in which FHC beat Lowell 5-3.

Lowell vs FHC.  Torsten [...]

Ottawa Hills upsets Wayland, advances to district finals

Ottawa Hills' Amani Pritchett (center) shoots over Wayland's Chase Burgess and Kevin Farmer in Ottawa Hills' upset victory Thursday.

The Ottawa Hills Bengals slayed another giant Wednesday, upsetting the top-seeded and heavily favored Wayland Wildcats, 59-52, in the WBBL Game of the Week, sponsored by Good GMC Isuzu.

After yet another narrow victory over yet another [...]
