Updated: WMich HS football signings

Perhaps more so than any other part of high school sports, collegiate recruiting has  a massive amount of mainstream appeal (if you subscribe to either Rivals.com or Scout.com you know what I’m talking about).  I can certainly understand the interest it receives, as there’s really nothing like the thrill of watching an athlete who you [...]

2010 Allstar football game rosters

Following review by a cross-state collection of veteran prep football coaches, 44 players from the East and 44 players from the West will call East Lansing, Mich., home beginning Sunday, June 13, culminating with the All Star game at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, at Spartan Stadium on the campus of Michigan State University. [...]

Rockford/EGR matchup carries secondary implications

It’s pretty much a toss-up between Rockford and East Grand Rapids for the pre-season bridesmaid trophy, as the second most talented basketball team in West Michigan (after Kalamazoo Central).  I’ve heard compelling arguments from pundits on either side of the rivalry (and I have my feelings, too), but there’s really no resolving the issue without [...]

Take care, coach Koziak: Muskegon coach resigns after 1 year

News broke late Thursday night that first year Muskegon football coach Matt Koziak will be stepping down from his post effective immediately.  Mike Mattson from the Muskegon Chronicle had the story first:

Matt Koziak’s stay as Muskegon’s head football coach has ended after one year.

Koziak submitted a letter of resignation to Muskegon athletic director Terri Clock, [...]

Just for fun: West Michigan repeats as cumulative football champs

Well, it wasn’t quite 2008, in which West Michigan took home seven out of eight possible state football championships.  But West Michigan still defended their football cumulative championship, even though the spread was much narrower this year.

WMA takes attendance, as read by champions

A look around the wide world of high school sports and the web that covers it.  Well, not the whole world, mostly just the distance between Lake Michigan and somewhere-in-the-vicinity-of-Lansing, give or take about 50-miles.  In an order wholly indecipherable to the naked eye.  So look closely:

Spencer, Elble and EGR win fourth consecutive D-3 championship

EGR's Elble sets the stage for Spencer's heroics

Down 21-17 with just over 2:00 to play in what had been a see-saw battle from the word “Go,” East Grand Rapids was staring at a fourth down and 14-yards to go.  The Pioneers huddled around coach Peter Stuursma as he drew up a final play on [...]

State finals preview nuggets, and wishes for a happy holidays

It’s the season to be thankful, and we here at West Michigan Allstar are very thankful for our sports community, and our awesome readership.  We’re also thankful that we’re not working over the Thanksgiving break (except to cover the state finals, of course), while others are.

So to give thanks to you all, and [...]

After excessive pomp and circumstance, it all comes down to this.

Photo Blog: Jackson Lumen Christi defeats Muskegon Heights in semifinals

Jackson Lumen Christi, the no.1 ranked team in Division-5 all year, soundly defeated upstart Muskegon Heights on a gorgeous November Saturday, 42-18.  It was testament to exactly what experience can mean in the playoffs — as in, Jackson Lumen Christi had a lot of it, and Muskegon Heights didn’t.  The Tigers had their chances on [...]

Walking the strength of schedule tightrope

Muskegon Catholic Central hopes reg-season tests prepared them for another championship

It’s usually counterproductive to look retrospectively at what you should have done, but it’s an activity that tends to be quite popular around this time in the football season.  One of the major places this happens is regarding schedule strength.  As in: “Should I [...]

Games to Watch Semifinals: Worlds Apart

Muskegon Heights' quarterback Willie Snead IV will play a key role in the Tigers win or loss

Once the dust settled on the regional finals, two West Michigan hopefuls were missing.  Still in the hunt for postseason glory, seven teams remain standing, committed to fighting until the very last moment to earn something that they [...]

Will Lowell and EGR bring hardware back from Ford Field?

Lowell will rely heavily on sophomore Gabe Dean's continued success

As part-2 of yesterday’s conversation detailing what would be required for West Michigan to retain their position atop the football totem pole, today we discuss the other half of the equation: Division-2 and Division 3.  Along with multiple victories by Muskegon County teams, West Michigan [...]
